ETHIOPIAN REUGEES IN SUDAN HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

The military operation in Tigray region began on November 4, 2020. The daily escalated war in Tigray put civilians at high risk. As a result of that, according to the UN, there is a massive fuel and food shortage in Tigray affecting not only locals, but also tens of thousands of refugees from Eritrea who live in the region. Tens of thousand of displaced Ethiopian refugees are running out of food and water due to the month-long conflict that has forced almost 50,000 to flee. Most of them are children and women.

PRAYERS FOR PEACE

Once safe from violence in their homeland, they have to survive their new lives in exile. The civilians who crossed the bored into neighboring Sudan arrived in cars, on tractors, in boats and by foot, they usually bring nothing more than the clothes they wear. Some have spent as much as two weeks walking towards safety, and most of that time without food after having avoided villages occupied by military soldiers.

Although Sudan has been the safe shelter for thousands of refuges, it was not prepared for the influx it would result in. The villages that received the refugees were immediately flooded with thousands of other refugees, and the food and the blankets that local NGOs collected quickly ran out. Many refugees have therefore had to sleep outside without neither. The exodus from Tigray also risks straining resources for the Sudanese people already living in this arid, improvised area. Local communities contributed enormously to feeding the refugees before NGOs such as the World Food Program turned up.

The most difficult obstacle to overcome for humanitarian assistance remains the inaccessibility of the region. Because of the ongoing combat, the UN stresses, it has become difficult to reach the regions that are in desperate need of food, clean water, and hygiene materials. This inaccessibility for the UN does not only impact the refugees from Tigray region of Ethiopia that are on the run from the war; it also has serious repercussions for the Eritrean refugees - who have completely depended on the UN’s efforts to offer aid in past years - that have left their countries in search of better lives.
